All about table tennis rubber types

Find out what types of rubbers are used in table tennis and what their differences are.

Table tennis rubbers

In table tennis, rubbers are the parts of the racket that come into contact with the ball. Besides, there are different types of rubbers, each offering specific characteristics in terms of speed, spin and control. Here are the main types of rubbers used.

Surfaces in table tennis: the smooth ones

Smooth rubbers have a regular surface without pimples or with very short pimples. They generally offer good control and are often used by beginners and intermediate players. These rubbers allow for versatile shots, but they offer less spin and speed than pips rubbers.

Rubbers with short pips

Obviously, short pips rubbers have shorter pips than long pips rubbers. They offer a combination of control, speed and spin. Short pips allow for faster, flatter swings, but less grip to generate spin.

Rubbers with long pips

And obviously, rubbers with long pips have longer and more widely spaced pimples. They are known for their ability to reverse effects. Indeed, when hitting the ball with a long pimple rubber, the spin received is often sent back to the opponent with the opposite effect. As a result, it can be confusing and difficult for the opponent to read.

Coatings with spin pips (pips-out)

Spin pips rubbers have pips that point outwards rather than inwards like inverted pips. These rubbers generally offer good speed and the ability to generate spin, especially cut spin. They are often used for defensive play to disrupt the opponent with fast and aggressive balls.

Rubbers with inverted pips

Reverse pips rubbers have a smooth surface with short pips that point inward. They offer a good grip on the ball, allowing to generate various effects, such as topspin, cut and sideways. Reverse pip rubbers are the most commonly used by professional players and offer a good balance of speed, control and spin.
