What is a table tennis blade ?

Find out what a table tennis blade is and how it differs from a table tennis or ping pong racket.

So what is a table tennis blade? The answer is simple, the wood is only one of the two parts that make up a table tennis racket.

table tennis blade

A table tennis blade, also incorrectly called a racket, is an essential piece of equipment used in table tennis. It is used by players to hit the ball.

The main component of a table tennis blade is, of course, wood. The species used to make table tennis blades can vary in species, quality and plies (layers).

Different types of wood can provide different degrees of speed, control, and spin.

Table tennis blades can be classified as all-wood or composite. In summary, it depends on the folds or layers that compose it. Thus, we speak of “composite” wood if it contains additional layers of materials such as carbon, fiberglass or arylate.

At Mamba Blades, we avoid the use of these materials due to their high CO2 emissions. We have replaced them with natural reinforcement fibers such as linen, hemp, cotton and basalt.

The table tennis blade has a handle that allows the player to grip and control the racket. The handle can be of different shapes and sizes to accommodate different playing styles and preferences. Common handle types include flared, straight and ergonomic handles.

The racket consists of two parts: the table tennis blade and the rubbers.

In other words, it is said to be a table tennis racket when the table tennis blade has rubbers glued to it.

These coating rubbers are responsible for generating spin, speed and control. Each rubber has two distinct sides: side A (red) and side B (black). Likewise, they can have different characteristics, such as ingoing or outgoing pins. But that’s not all, you will find different sponge thicknesses and various types of rubber surfaces (smooth or sticky). These characteristics all have an impact on the play style.

Players choose their table tennis blades based on their style of play, skill level and personal preference.

Some players prefer a blade that offers more control and placement. However, others favor speed and power.

The choice of blade in combination with the rubbers, significantly affects the overall performance and playing characteristics of the racquet.
