Here are the basic rules of table tennis or ping pong: the duration and structure of a game, the service, how to score a point, where the ball must bounce, how to play singles or doubles and finally, the rule of ‘acceleration.

Duration of a match

The table tennis match is played in 5 sets of 11 points. The winner wins 3 sets. Please note that at high level, the individual meeting is structured around 7 sets with 4 winning sets.

The service

Here are the rules of the service. Care must be taken to respect them at the risk of losing the point.

To serve, the ball and racket must be above table level and behind the baseline. The ball must always remain visible.

The hand should be open, flat, and facing up. The ball must be thrown vertically and rise at least 16 cm before being struck by the racket.

Where should the ball bounce?

First of all, if you are playing individually, you can serve wherever you want, that is, you can aim whatever part you want on the opponent’s table. However, the ball must bounce once on each side of the net. If the ball accidentally hits the net, there is a “let” and we must restart the service.

On the other hand, if you are playing in doubles, the ball must move diagonally and therefore touch the opposite square in the opponent’s court.

Each player serves twice in a row, but when both players reach 10 points, each player only has one consecutive serve.

How can you win a point ?

The opponent fails to return the ball before the second bounce in his court.

He returns the ball but it does not hit your court.

Your opponent hits the ball more than once in a row

He touches a ball without letting it bounce

He moves the table

Of course, conversely, you have to respect these rules so as not to lose the point.

How to play in singles ?

After the serve, the opposing player must allow the ball to bounce once on his side of the table and return it.

In this case, if the net is touched, there will be no fault, as long as the ball bounces in the opposing court.

How to play doubles ?

As we said earlier, the serve should be done diagonally, from right side to right side. In addition, a player cannot play twice in a row. Thus, the players must alternate their intervention. As for the service, the principle remains the same, two services per player, and the members of the team alternate.

Expedite rule

The purpose of this rule is to limit the total duration of a game. Thus, it is applied by the referee or at the request of the players. The referee decides to apply it if a round lasting more than 10 minutes resulted in the scoring of less than 18 points. If a ball is playing, the same player begins his service again.

From this point on, the first player to return the ball 13 times scores the point, if it has not been scored up to that point by the usual means. In addition, the rhythm of the services is modified: we alternate at each point.

Finally, once decreed, the acceleration rule remains valid until the end of the game.

It’s your turn !
